Why are we invested in helping kids learn cursive?
Learning to write in cursive obviously practices fine motor skills and improves dexterity. Schools are letting go of these concrete physical learning gains in favor of new technology based skills – like keyboarding or navigating the various educational softwares in classrooms these days. But are other learning gains being lost that are not as easily accounted for when we toss cursive instruction out the window? We think so. That’s why we believe in the importance of providing parents with cursive worksheets.
We want to fill gaps we find in curriculum and the Common Core State Standards. Standards and curriculum always have areas that need support because teachers have limited time with our kids in the classroom. So consider the arguments put forth for cursive instruction, and know that practicing at home at least has undisputed physical gains – with probably many other less obvious gains.
